National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), Mr Sam Olumekun mni

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that over 1.3 million Nigerians have completed their online pre-registration in the first week of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

According to National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun mni, who issued a statement on Monday 25th August 2025, the exercise which began on Monday 18th August has already recorded 1,379,342 registrants nationwide as of Sunday 24th August.

Providing a breakdown of the figures, Olumekun disclosed that 661,846 (47.96%) are male, while 717,856 (52.04%) are female. Young Nigerians between 18 and 34 years accounted for the majority with 860,286 (62.37%). Students made up 374,534 (27.15%), while 27,089 persons with disabilities (1.96%) also registered. Full details have been published on the Commission’s website and official platforms.

He added thatthe full details of the registration figures by state, gender, age, occupation, and disability have been published on the Commission’s website and official platforms for public information.

Meanwhile, INEC has commenced in-person registration today across 811 State and Local Government offices nationwide. This provides an opportunity for Nigerians who prefer physical registration to do so, and for those who began the process online to complete it at designated centres.

The Commission restated that the CVR is only open to Nigerian citizens who are at least 18 years old and who have not previously registered. It warned against double or multiple registration, noting that such actions contravene the law. However, transfers of registration within or across States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as well as the replacement of lost or damaged voter cards, remain permissible during the exercise.

Mr. Olumekun further urged eligible Nigerians not to delay their registration until the deadline of 30th August 2026, stressing that late rushes often overwhelm registration centres and lead to last-minute appeals for extensions.
