Liberians head to the polls

All eyes are on Liberia as the country’s over 2.1 million registered voters head to the existing 5,390 polling units today to choose their next President, out of 20 competing candidates, which include the incumbent Vice President, Mr. Joseph Boakai, former rebel leader, Prince Yormie Johnson and football icon, Mr. George Weah. Prominent Philanthropist, MacDella Cooper is the only female candidate in the presidential race.

President of the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commission (ECONEC) and Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of Nigeria, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu is already on ground with a strong monitoring team, including two National Commissioners, Dr Adekunle Ogunmola and Prof. Anthonia Okoosi-Simbine.

According to the timetable displayed on the National Elections Commission of Liberia’s website, the final results of the elections will be announced on 25th October.

The incumbent president, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf is about to complete her tenure (of sox years), and she’s expected to step down once a new president emerges.
