As the Anambra State Governorship election draws near, The Electoral Institute (TEI), the Training and Research arm of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has scheduled a series of trainings for different categories of officers participating in the election.
The training, which has been approved by the Board of the Institute, is scheduled to commence on Wednesday, October 11, 2017.
According to the schedule signed by the Institute’s Acting Director- General, Dr. Sa’ad Umar Idris, training of Electoral Officers/ Assistant Electoral Officers (Operations) will hold from 11th to 13th October, while that of Assistant Electoral Officers (AEOs) Admin and Cluster will take place from 16th to 20th October.
The training of both categories of officers would be done in collaboration with the International Foundation for Electoral systems (IFES).
The purpose is to enable Electoral Officers and Assistant Electoral Officers (Ops) plan effectively for elections and also for Electoral Officers to identify activities with timelines for a successful conduct of the election.
The training, which will take place at Awka, the State capital, is equally meant to properly position the Electoral Officers/Assistant Electoral Officers (Operations) to enable them discharge ad-hoc staff training on polling and counting procedures effectively.
Expected benefits to be derived from training the AEOs Admin and Cluster include the conduct of Train of Trainers (ToT) for participation, to enable them coordinate and conduct electoral training at their Local Government Areas.
Dr. Idris said that the training of Security Personnel on electoral security best practices and knowledge of the electoral process, is scheduled to hold between 25th October and 1st November 2017.
Other officers to be trained on election duties by the Commission include Supervisory Presiding Officers (SPOs), Presiding and Assistant Presiding Officers (POs/APOs) and Collation/Returning Officers (COs/ROs).
The Polling Officers and Assistant Polling Officers are to be trained on polling and counting procedures, while Collation Officers and Returning Officers will be trained on collation and returning of results/candidates. All trainings will end on November 15, 2017.
